My name is Joanne and I live in in a lovely Taff property in Leckwith. I work at weekends at the Heath hospital in Cardiff as an Auxiliary Nurse. Now my son is getting older I have more spare time to myself. I found myself getting bored and at a loose end, so I had a chat with my Housing Officer, Nicki, who told me about Taff’s jobs and training programme.
Clare from the Community Investment Team arranged to meet me to discuss my interests. I signed up to several training courses at the meeting, including a Mental Health and Wellbeing course, as this area of work interests me. Clare told me about the wonderful work that Age Connects Cardiff and the Vale do in the community to help isolated elderly people. I love talking about pastimes so felt visiting an elderly person once a week would be perfect for me.
Following training and a DBS check I started visiting two Canton residents. I often walk down to a local coffee shop with one of the ladies as she doesn’t manage to go out very often. The lady always tells me that my visit makes her feel free and so happy. Volunteering with age connects is wonderful. I hope more people consider volunteering after reading my story because it makes a big difference to people’s lives in the community.
