Local children raise awareness of construction site dangers

You may remember back in October we visited St Patrick’s R C Primary School in Grangetown to raise awareness of the dangers of building sites. Taff Housing Association is currently building 19 new homes on the former site of the FA Jones Decorators, Penarth Road, Cardiff. The site is just a stone’s throw away from St Patrick's R C Primary School.

The Construction Industry Training Board Mascot Honor Goodsite and her team from Taff Housing and Hale Construction told the children all about the various hazards found on building sites. They also informed the children about the equipment used in construction and the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that is used throughout the industry. The children then had the opportunity to try on a hard hat and high vis jacket.

During the visit we launched a health and safety poster design competition. We were delighted by the standard of the entries! The children were encouraged to use their new knowledge to warn others of the dangers of entering a building site.

We asked Taff Tenants and Volunteers to choose their favourites during their annual Christmas meal. The entries were varied and full of imagination, so it was a difficult job!

The voters were particularly impressed with 3 entries.

Community Investment Officer Clare and Hale Project Manager Gerwyn presented the winners with their prizes - children’s construction took kits.

In the New Year, the winning entries will be displayed on the hording of the site on Penarth Road so keep an eye out!
