Red Sea House is a scheme comprising 15 self-contained flats, specifically designed and run for the needs of older people from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities. Staff are able communicate with the tenants in their primary language, religious needs are catered for in the design of the building and support service (e.g. toilet facilities and support times) and staff have enhanced cultural awareness.
Within the scheme there is a residents' lounge which benefits from internet access and Somali/Arabic TV. Culturally appropriate daily meals are available to all residents at a subsidised cost.
Red Sea House has a Scheme Manager who is on duty from 9 am to 5 pm every weekday. Community alarm systems are in place in every flat.
Support staff are available to work with residents to promote independent living by helping them:
Manage money and paying bills
Apply for benefits and grants
Comply with tenancy obligations, including paying rent
Liaise with health professionals
Receive emotional support
Red Sea House residents have their own association which organises social events and provides feedback on Taff’s services through regular meetings.
The scheme was developed on the site of the Bosun Pub in Angelina Street, Butetown and was completed in August 2002.
Taff Housing Association originally developed Red Sea House to provide a service for Somali Elders close to their community and established networks in order to meet their specific needs. The scheme has developed over time and is now open to individuals and all genders from Black and Minority Ethnic groups, providing they meet the criteria for retirement housing.
There is also a community space (able to accommodate 50+ people), large kitchen and toilet facilities.
This space is hired out to local community groups, including home-work clubs, voluntary organisations and social enterprise charities.
If you are interested in living at Red Sea House, you should apply via the Cardiff Council Common Waiting List. Please see our section ’Find A Home', but also feel free to contact the Scheme Manager to discuss your needs or for assistance to complete the application form.
