My name is Clare Dickinson. I am the Senior Community Investment Officer here at Taff Housing Association, based at our head office in Canton. I manage our supported volunteer project as well as our jobs and training scheme.
Set up in 2013 thanks to a 3 year pot of funding from the WCVA and Welsh Government, our supported volunteer project has helped change many lives. We reinvest any profit that we make as a business back into the community. We decided to fund the project long term using some of this profit, to continue helping our Tenants and members of the local community in achieving their career goals.
We offer a wide range of unpaid volunteering opportunities across the Association to suit a variety of interests.
Multi-Trade Carpenter Volunteer, based in Cardiff. We are currently offering a volunteering opportunity 1 day a week for a Multi-Trade Carpenter volunteer. You will spend time shadowing a Multi-trade Carpenter assisting with general maintenance works such as wall and floor tiling, glazing, fencing, plaster patching, painting and basic plumbing to our housing stock. A CSCS card is required for this placement. If you are at Taff Tenant we can fund this. We will also provide you with free access to a manual handling qualification. This role will require a DBS check as it will involve being in Tenants homes.
Refugee Support Project, based in Cardiff and Barry. We are currently looking for a number of volunteers to help families adjust to life in Cardiff. This placement would suit someone interested in helping others, marketing, media, events, administration and community work. Tasks vary and will be tailored to suit your interests and career goals. We are particularly interested in Arabic speakers to shadow Support Workers to assist with translation and community support. A DBS check is required for these roles. Minimum 2 days a week.
Lighthouse project, based in Newport. We are currently looking for volunteers to help our support project based in Newport. The project assists local residents with generic floating support. It also supports refugees and the partially hearing community. Tasks may include; support work, group work (such as life skills), admin and media such as designing leaflets and liaising with external agencies for partnership working. We are particularly interested in volunteers who know British Sign Language. A DBS check will be required for these vacancies.
Vale Floating Support, based in Barry. This placement would be working with families and / or generic (a mix of all client groups). Tasks may include; support work, admin and media such as designing leaflets and liaising with external agencies for partnership working. Floating support aims to support with housing issues so that residents remain living independently, stay safe and feel settled in their home. The support is delivered on a weekly basis either in the home or, if appropriate, in a public place. Support is time-limited, and aims to improve the resident’s skills and confidence to enable them to be independent and empowered. A DBS check is required for these roles. Minimum 2 days a week.
Red Sea House Support Volunteer, based in Butetown. Red Sea House is a scheme comprising 15 self-contained flats, specifically designed and run for the needs of older people from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities. Within the scheme there is a residents' lounge which benefits from internet access and Somali/Arabic TV. Tasks may include; support work, admin and organising events and activities for residents. A DBS check will be required for this vacancy. Minimum 1 day per week.
Community Investment Volunteers , based in Canton, Riverside and Grangetown. At Taff we offer a wide range of opportunities to our Tenants and residents. We run regular community group meetings in our conference suite. You can read more about the groups here. We are always looking for new volunteers to support the groups. Tasks may include; admin, self led research, minute taking, helping to book speakers, helping to organise events and activities and marketing. Minimum 1 day per week. This placement would be based in Canton however you can choose to complete some of the tasks from home if you prefer.

All of our placements are open to Tenants and non Tenants. We can however create placements on demand for Tenants. We also work in partnership with local businesses to provide access to a wider range of opportunities in other areas such as; health, sports, arts, tourism (to name just a few).
Whilst you are volunteering you can gain access to a wide range of accredited training and workshops. As well as our in house training you will be given access to a range of online training and courses specific to your placement.

Once we have had a chat over the phone or via email, I will ask you to complete a volunteer application form. Once I have this back, I will meet with you to discuss a way forward.
If we have a vacancy that interests you, I will arrange a volunteer interview at our head office in Canton. This is basically an informal chat with you, myself and the team manager. If we are able to offer you a placement, you may need to undergo a DBS check to check for any convictions that may impact our ability to offer you a placement. I will guide you through this process. If we are able to offer you a placement following the DBS result, I will organise an induction which will include basic training. Don’t worry if you have convictions on your DBS check, we always look at the nature of the conviction- we just ask you to be honest with us.
